The Scenic Route: Making the Olonzac to Homps Walk Much More Fun!
If you spend any time around our corner of the Minervois, you likely know the standard route between Olonzac and Homps well. But why stick to the main road when you can trade the asphalt for stunning rows of vines, peaceful waters, and proper Languedoc countryside?
Today, I’m sharing one of our absolute favourite local walks. It is a gorgeous, breezy route that cuts through the rural landscape and makes the journey between the two villages infinitely more fun.
The Catch? Timing is Everything!
Before you lace up your walking boots, there is one golden rule for this particular track: it needs to have been dry for a while.
Because it’s a natural, rural pathway that crosses close to the water, a heavy Languedoc downpour can turn sections of it into a bit of a mud bath. But when the southern sun has done its job and baked the earth dry? It is absolute bliss.
As you can see from the map, this beautiful 1.3-kilometre stretch takes about 18 minutes of pure, uninterrupted peace, skirting right along the edge of the Aude border.
Vineyard Views & Sun-Drenched Trails
What makes this walk so special is the sheer variety of classic Mediterranean views packed into such a short distance. You'll find yourself walking right alongside the rugged, beautifully aligned Minervois vineyards that look spectacular at any time of year.
There is something incredibly therapeutic about the symmetry of the vines against a bright blue sky, with the distant hills framing the horizon. It's the rural France we all fell in love with.
A Hidden Oasis
Just when you think it's all vineyard views, the trail reveals its best-kept secret: a gorgeous, sparkling water feature where the sun catches the ripples just right.
It’s the perfect spot to pause, let the dogs have a look around (if you have energetic pups in tow like we do!), and just soak in the slow-living Mediterranean life.
We are already counting down the days until we head back out there in a couple of weeks to enjoy it all over again. If you're looking to upgrade your usual village-to-village stroll into a mini-adventure, definitely give this route a try next time the weather behaves!
