The Heat is On: Aude Water Restrictions Are Officially In Force ☀️
Well, it’s officially that time of year again...
Parts of the Aude woke up this morning to the news that water restrictions are now actively in force. We are talking proper prefectural orders and official decrees—so yes, it is official-official. This isn't just a friendly local reminder to "maybe go easy on the hosepipe." It's legal, government-issued document official.
Before anyone panics and starts hoarding bottled water like it's 2020: no, this does not mean you can't flush your loo.
What it does mean is that there are strict legal rules regarding what you can and cannot do with your water supply. Because the rules change depending entirely on where your property sits, it is well worth knowing exactly which category your commune falls into.
The Four Levels of French Drought Alerts
In France, drought management is divided into four distinct phases. Depending on the local groundwater and river levels, your municipality will be placed into one of these buckets:
-
Vigilance (Drought Watch): The "heads up" phase. Everyone is encouraged to save water, but there are no hard restrictions yet.
-
Alerte (Drought Alert): Reduction of water usage for agricultural purposes, and strict time limits on watering gardens, washing cars, or filling swimming pools.
-
Alerte Renforcée (Enhanced Alert): Even stricter time limits and outright bans on several non-essential water activities (like midday watering).
-
Crise (Crisis): Total ban on all non-priority water usage. Water is strictly reserved for drinking, health, and safety.
So, where is your village sitting right now? Are you on a standard alert? An enhanced alert? Or are you blissfully unaware and still aggressively watering your petunias at noon like it’s 2019?
How to Check Your Specific Commune: Introducing VigiEau
Because these decrees are updated constantly and vary heavily from village to village, guessing isn't a great strategy (especially since the local Gendarmerie can hand out hefty fines for non-compliance!).
To find out exactly where you stand, the French government has a brilliant, easy-to-use tool called VigiEau.
All you need to do is type in your specific municipality or postcode, and it will instantly tell you your current drought level, alongside an exact list of what you can and can't do with your tap and hose.
