Have you ever driven a mobile toaster? Because I have—and it might just be the most fun I’ve had behind the wheel since my teens!
Last year, our youngest daughter spent six months driving the ultra-quirky Citroen Ami. While it might look like a Lego brick on wheels, this tiny electric quadricycle completely changed how we view teen driving and independence.
If you've been curious about whether this unique micro-car is actually practical, here is our honest experience.
The French Approach to Youth Driving
One of the best things about the driving laws in France is how they are structured to support young people. The system is designed to give youngsters as much real-world road experience as possible, as early as safely possible.
Because the Citroen Ami is classified as a light quadricycle, our daughter was able to hit the road at just 16 years old.
Instead of waiting until she was older to learn how to navigate traffic, she was able to build incredible road confidence in a safe, speed-capped environment.
The Ultimate Parent Lifesaver (Goodbye, Taxi Duty!)
Let’s be honest: parenting teenagers usually involves running a 24/7 unpaid taxi service.
While having the Citroen Ami didn't completely eliminate our chauffeur duties, it gave us a much-needed break. She could drive herself to school, sports, and friends' houses, giving her a taste of freedom and giving us a bit of our weekends back. It’s practical, incredibly easy to manoeuvre into tight parking spaces, and remarkably cheap to run.
"Is That a Lego Car?"
You cannot drive a Citroen Ami if you want to blend into the background. It is an absolute magnet for smiles, stares, and hilarious commentary.
During our six months with the car, we lost count of the brilliant nicknames people shouted out. The top two crowd favourites were definitely:
-
The Mobile Toaster 🍞
-
The Lego Car 🧱
It brought so much joy, not just to our daughter, but to everyone who saw her driving it.
Final Verdict: Is the Citroen Ami Worth It?
Absolutely. It proved to us that big adventures and invaluable life skills can come in very small, quirky packages. If you are looking for a safe, eco-friendly, and confidence-boosting option for a young driver, the Ami is tough to beat.
